New Study: Breast Augmentation Surgery Improves Quality of Life

Breast augmentation surgery can affect a woman in many ways – enhancing her appearance, boosting her confidence and making her more comfortable in her own skin.  But, can the procedure measurably improve a woman’s quality of life.  That’s exactly what one new study wanted to find out.

Recently published in the July issue of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery® from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), researchers designed a questionnaire to flesh out the link between breast enhancement and quality of life.  And, according to a recent press release by the Society, “Women undergoing breast augmentation surgery report substantial improvement in several key areas of quality of life…”  So, what sort of things did they look at?

The questionnaire, known as BREAST-Q©, measured six important elements of quality of life: “satisfaction with breasts and with overall outcome, psychosocial, sexual, and physical well-being, and satisfaction with care.”  When it came to the 41 women who participated, researchers found significant improvements in three of these areas: satisfaction with breasts, psychosocial well-being and sexual well-being.  The most popular cosmetic surgery in the US, it seems breast augmentation may have benefits more far-reaching than we once imagined.

Breast Augmentation Procedure

Breast augmentation is not a “one size fits all” type of procedure.  Rather, we work to create a customized treatment plan for you, considering your medical needs and cosmetic goals.  So, whatever your motivation, understand that breast surgery has the ability to achieve a larger, fuller, more proportionate bustline.

The procedure, itself, is relatively simple.  Typically, performed under general anesthesia, a silicone or saline implant is placed behind breast tissue or the muscle of the chest wall.  Many patients also opt for a complementary procedure such as breast lift surgery to achieve their desired result.  As the number-one cosmetic surgery in the US, there were over 307,000 breast augmentation procedures performed in 2011, says recent data from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.
