We all know that liposuction is the number-one way to deal with stubborn, exercise-resistant fat – but did you know it’s also the number-one cosmetic surgery in the US? That detail comes directly from this year’s annual plastic surgery report from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. So, exactly how many women and men choose liposuction each year? According to the organization, there were well over 325 thousand liposuction procedures performed in 2011 – a figure that shows tremendous growth! Compared with the 2010 numbers, this represents a full 12.6% growth in popularity in one year alone. Think that’s impressive? Consider this: compared to the 1997 numbers, we see a remarkable 83.9% boom in popularity.
Even more interesting is the growing popularity of male liposuction. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, men accounted for a full 11% of all liposuction procedures performed in 2011!

How Does Liposuction Work?
Liposuction goes by several names – lipoplasty, suction lipectomy, etc. But, no matter what you call it, the goal is the same: to sculpt the body by removing undesirable fat. Common areas include the abdomen, waist, hips, buttocks, thighs, knees, chin, cheeks, neck and upper arms
A minimally-invasive procedure at its core, liposuction is one of the most effective and time-tested surgeries around. Before the procedure, the treatment area is fully anesthetized, ensuring that the patient remains calm and comfortable throughout the treatment. We then make tiny incisions and inject a local anesthetic into the area to help expand and firm the fat, making it easier to remove. Using a small tube called a “cannula,” fat is then suctioned away. No stitches are needed after liposuction since the incisions are small enough to heal on their own.
And, while it’s certainly a simple procedure, the results can be simply dramatic!
