Pregnancy and delivery takes a toll on a woman’s body, and is often the most unforgiving to the abdominal area. As many mothers know, the effects of pregnancy on the body last long after the baby is born. For women who have endured childbirth and are looking to restore their appearance, a tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty
, is one of the most common and successful procedures available.A tummy tuck helps to flatten and shape the abdomen and waist by removing excess fat and skin. The procedure works best on women who are close to their goal weight, but have have pockets of fat that do not respond to diet and exercise. Since pregnancy can diminish results, it is recommended that a woman delays having a tummy tuck until she is done with child bearing.Abdominoplasty is not a one-size-fits-all procedure. Treatment should be customized to fit the needs and goals of each patient and produce optimal results. The following is a quick look at the differences between a full tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) and a mini tummy tuck (partial abdominoplasty). The following is a basic guide to these two procedures. During your consultation, Dr. Rhee can help to assess your needs and decide which method will work best for you.
Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck)
An abdominoplasty is performed under general anesthesia and usually takes anywhere from two to five hours. During the procedure, the surgeon will make two incisions- one from hipbone to hipbone close to the pubic area, and another around the navel. They will separate the skin from the abdominal muscles, which are then pulled together and stitched into place, creating a firmer and more shapely contour. Excess skin is then removed, and the remaining skin is stretched over the tightened muscles. The belly button is then reattached in a new position. After surgery, compression garments must be worn worn and a temporary tube may be inserted under the skin to drain excess fluid. Recovery time ranges from two weeks to a few months, depending on the severity of the surgery. The results of a tummy tuck are long-lasting, particularly when weight is maintained through diet and exercise. A scar spanning the lower abdomen from hip to hip will remain, but is placed low enough to be covered by underwear or a bikini.
Partial Abdominoplasty (Mini Tummy Tuck)
A partial abdominoplasty is similar to a tummy tuck, except for the fact that it is performed up to the belly button, which remains intact. A mini tummy tuck also offers shorter incisions and quicker healing. The surgery usually takes one to two hours, and is performed under general or local anesthesia, depending on the amount of skin and fat to be removed. During the procedure a single, small incision is made above the pubic area, and skin is stretched and lifted to the belly button. Liposuction may be used to remove excess fat in the area.
