Botox for Migraines

In 2010, the FDA approved Botox for the treatment of migraines which demonstrates that the injectable has non-cosmetic purposes as well. To date, the majority of effective migraine treatments on the market only work retroactively, treating the symptoms only once they occur. Botox is one of the limited options available that can act as a migraine prevention strategy.

How Botox Prevents Migraines

Botox works to prevent migraines as injections are made into the muscles around the forehead and neck; areas that often become tense when a migraine occurs. The goal is to reduce the muscle tension that can otherwise lead to a greater number of enlarged blood vessels that contribute to migraine pain. If these muscles cannot become as tense, migraines may not occur at all, or at least with reduced intensity.
