Gynecomastia is a common condition that can have a number of different causes, ranging from certain medications to hormonal imbalances and more. This enlargement of male breasts affects approximately 40% to 60% of all men, and can be a major source of both physical and emotional discomfort.
Male breast reduction is a surgical procedure that reduces the size of male breasts, restoring a more natural and appealing contour. Ideal candidates for this procedure are men of all ages who are in good general health, but are unhappy or uncomfortable with the size of their breasts.
How Is It Performed?
Male breast reduction is typically an outpatient procedure, performed under general anesthesia over the course of one to three hours. There are a number of different techniques that can be used for this procedure, and your surgeon will decide which is right for you.
In milder cases, liposuction will be used to remove excess fatty tissue. An incision will be made around the areola, and fat will be suctioned out as needed. In the event that glandular tissue needs to be removed, this tissue will be excised alongside liposuction. More advanced cases may require the removal of skin in addition to glandular tissue and fat, to allow skin to effectively reshape the new contour of the breast.
Patients who have undergone male breast reduction can expect to experience discomfort, bruising and swelling, most of which will subside over the course of a few days.
