Improve Your Ears’ Appearance with Otoplasty

If you are unhappy with the way your ears look, do not worry. By means of a procedure called otoplasty, you can change the appearance of your ears. A cosmetic procedure, otoplasty is performed on your ears but it does not, in any way, affect your hearing. While its most popular uses are for ear pinning and for dealing with unusually large ears, it can be employed for a number of other reasons too.

About Otoplasty

  • Who is a candidate? Apart from those suffering from very large or very protruding ears, otoplasty is suitable for those who suffer from cauliflower ears, which are generally a result of repeated trauma, misshaped earlobes, lop ears, and very small ears. The procedure can be used to deal with birth defects in ear shape and problems resulting from skin cancer. In addition, those who have severe ear injuries (cosmetic, not hearing problems) that have resulted in missing parts can also benefit. Parts of the ear, or the entire ear itself, can be reconstructed. While the procedure is suited for people of all ages, it is usually performed on children between the ages of 4 and 14.
  • What does the procedure involve? Otoplasty may take around 3 hours. For very young children, a general anesthesia is advised. For others, a local anesthesia is sufficient, though it is usually accompanied by a sedative. During the procedure, a small incision will be made near the place where you head and ear meet. Then, the cartilage will be sculpted to desired shape and any excess skin may be removed. Stitches and bandages are used to keep your ear in place till healing is complete. Sometimes, even if the problem is only with one ear, the procedure may be performed on both ears to maintain symmetry. There are very few side effects. These may include a bit of pain and a barely visible scar. You should not sleep on the side of the ear that has been operated upon.
