Each year, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) releases statistics on nearly every cosmetic procedure performed in the US.  The ASPS also looks at how these data change over time.  While overall, more and more people are seeking out cosmetic surgery each year, the growing number of Botox and Dysport procedures is particularly noteworthy.According to the ASPS data, there were 1,618,438 Botox/Dysport procedures performed in 2009.  The following year, 2010, there was a shocking 1,969,718 procedures performed.  These figures represent a full 22% jump in one year alone.  But, it’s not just Botox/Dysport procedures that have grown by leaps and bounds.  The ASPS data also suggests that from 2009 to 2010, Facelift procedures grew by 9% and Ear Surgery procedures grew by 18%.  Clearly Botox and Dysport aren’t going anywhere.  Read on for a brief introduction to these common injectables.

An Introduction to Botulinum Toxin Type A (Botox/Dysport)

Wrinkles, though a natural part of the aging process, can cause quite a deal of distress.  Lines that appear when we smile, laugh or frown can make us look older, and no one wants that.  Thankfully, treatments like Botox and Dysport can help combat creases.   Essentially, Botulinum Toxin Type A—Botox & Dysport—is a muscle relaxer that can help reduce the appearance of facial lines and wrinkles.  The result is a fresher, more youthful appearance. The effects of Botox can be seen within 24 hours following the treatment, and your results will become more apparent in the days following.  While everyone is different, the effects of Botox typically last up to four months.
