Can BOTOX® Boost Self Esteem?
- Posted on: May 11 2012
We all know that BOTOX® can fight the appearance of wrinkles, but can it actually make us feel better about ourselves? Can it boost self esteem? That’s what one plastic surgeon, Steven Dayan, wanted to find out.
In this recent study published in medical journal, Dermatologic Surgery, one hundred facial wrinkle patients were either treated with botulinum toxin type A or a saline placebo. Botulinum toxin type A is a category of injectables that includes treatments like BOTOX and Dysport®. The objective was “To determine the effects that [botulinum toxin type A] injections for the treatment of facial wrinkles had on quality of life … and self-esteem.”
Participants also completed questionnaires that measured factors like self esteem, satisfaction and quality of life before and after treatment. Unsurprisingly, based on the findings, “There were “Increases in overall self-esteem and appearance-, social-, and performance-related self-esteem were observed in participants treated with [botulinum toxin type A].” And, while this is not an indication of what your results will be, it certainly reinforces the idea that cosmetic treatment isn’t just “skin deep.”

BOTOX Turns 10 Years Old
According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, “April 15th marked the 10-year anniversary of the approval of Botox Cosmetic by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).” In that time, botulinum toxin type A procedures have become the number-one cosmetic procedure in the US.
How does it work? BOTOX is essentially a muscle relaxer that works to prevent facial creases. It works best with intermittent creases, like “frown lines.” For deeper, more persistent creases, many patients will instead choose a soft tissue filler.
