What is a tummy tuck?
The tummy tuck, or โabdominoplasty,โ is a surgical procedure that addresses not only excess fat but excess skin as well. Liposuction alone will only remove fat cells from the stomach, but if an extensive amount of fat is removed, patients will be left with excess skin as well. The tummy tuck incorporates both fat and skin removal in the midsection to address belly fat and flanks, often referred to as โmuffin top.โ A long incision is made underneath the underwear line and used for the removal of fat and skin, and the area is sutured when complete. Patients will have a scar, but this will remain hidden under clothing, even bathing suits, as an inconspicuous reminder of the procedure.
Why choose a tummy tuck over liposuction?
Liposuction is best used in smaller areas where fat needs to be removed. If utilized in an area where a significant amount of fat is removed, patients will have sagging skin remaining. The tummy tuck is used in the abdominal area because it addresses both problems with a single surgery.
Will I lose weight with a tummy tuck?
The tummy tuck is considered a body contouring procedure and not a weight loss solution, though some patients will experience a small amount of weight loss due to the removal of fat and skin. This is not the โend goalโ of a tummy tuck, however, and most candidates for this procedure are those who are within their ideal weight range but want to target this specific area of the body.
