What is Blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, can be performed to either lift droopy eyelids that affect your vision or for cosmetic purposes. If you have fat deposits on your eyelids, bags under your eyes or if your upper and/or lower eyelids are saggy, blepharoplasty may be right for you.

Eyelid Surgery: What to Know

  • Who is a candidate? If you are looking for cosmetic procedure to deal with deep wrinkles, dark circles, or crow’s feet, then blepharoplasty is not for you. This procedure is designed for anyone looking to lift or eliminate fat in the eyelids.
  • Can blepharoplasty be performed on anybody? As long as you are healthy and don’t have any existing eye diseases, you are likely eligible for blepharoplasty. Smoking is not recommended, however the final call will be up to your doctor.
  • The procedure: Blepharoplasty typically takes less than 45 minutes to complete. Along with a local anesthetic, an IV sedative may also be used. As needed, incisions will be made on your eyelids, generally in the natural creases or below your lash line so that the marks will not be obviously visible. Excess fat and/or skin will be removed before the incisions are closed. Surgical tape, sutures, or tissue glue may be employed for closing the incisions.
  • Recovering from the procedure: You may not be able to go back to your work for 10 days after the surgery, though you will be able to perform many of your routine activities after 3 to 5 days. The results will become evident in a month or two. Common side effects include light sensitivity and swelling and bruising, though they will reduce within 4 weeks. You should not use contact lenses for two weeks and should use eye drops, if prescribed. Cool compresses can also provide relief from discomfort.
