Your Guide to Breast Augmentation Surgery

Each year, millions of women opt to undergo breast augmentation surgery. The decision to undergo breast augmentation surgery is extremely personal, and one that women should be educated about!

Breast augmentation surgery offers many benefits for women, including enhancing their appearance and self-esteem. Breast augmentation is also ideal for women who have small breasts, or who have lost breast size or volume due to life-changing events such as pregnancy or weight-loss.

Breast augmentation surgery involves placing implants, composed of either saline or silicone gel, behind each breast, under the breast tissue or the chest muscle. Each type of implant offers different advantages. Your surgeon will work with you to decide which type of implant will work best for you!

One advantage of a saline breast implant is that it is composed of salt water, which can be easily absorbed by the body if the implant ruptures. Saline implants, however, may also look unnatural on very thin women who have little breast tissue to cover their implants, or on women who have undergone reconstructive breast surgery. Silicone gel-filled implants look and feel more natural, which patients love.

Breast implants can be placed in several ways. With a transaxillary incision, the incisions are made within the folds of armpit tissue. The procedure is occasionally performed with an endoscope. The biggest advantage of this incision is that it will leave no scarring on the breasts.  Breast augmentation surgery can also be performed with an incision made under the breasts, and close to the inframmamary fold. The incision ensures proper placement of the breast implant, and leaves little risk for visible scars!

The best candidates for breast augmentation are adult women who have small, or asymmetrical breasts, or who have seen their breasts become significantly smaller following pregnancy or weight-loss. Candidates should also be non-smokers, in generally good health, and within reach of their ideal weight. Women must also be realistic about what the surgery can do for them, since it cannot make them perfect, though it can improve their appearance and confidence. Breast augmentation surgery can also be performed in combination with other procedures, like a breast lift.
