Botox vs. Fillers | Finding the Best Option

Botox is a non-surgical alternative that been utilized by 11million men and women.  So, what’s the difference between Botox and fillers such as Juvederm and Restylane?  Essentially, Botox is a muscle relaxer.  This treatment works to prevent creases in the skin, and is used most often on the forehead, frown lines and crow’s feet.  If a patient has creases that appear intermittently—such as while squinting or frowning—Botox may be the answer.  For those with creases that are always visible, fillers may be a better option.

Fillers, such as Juvederm and Restylane, work by essentially filling the spaces or valleys of creases.  Juvederm works by giving volume and support to the skin.  Often, it is also used to sculpt the cheeks and plump the lips.  Restylane is most commonly used to treat lines between the eyes as well as the nasolabial folds, also knows as the “smile lines.”

What To Expect With Injectables

Prior to treatment, all patients are screened and briefed.  We will discuss whether or not injectables such as Botox, Juvederm and Restylane are good options for you.  On the day of the procedure, pain medication may be administered to minimize any discomfort associated with the treatment.  Botox and Juvederm treatments can take as little as 15 minutes, and a Restylane treatment often takes less than an hour.

The effects of Botox can be seen within 24 hours following the treatment, and results become more apparent in the days following.  While individual results can vary, the effects of Botox typically last up to four months.  A Botox treatment is often done in conjunction with other treatments such as laser skin resurfacing or a facelift.  With fillers, results are usually longer lasting.  The effects of Juvederm typically last six to nine months or longer with a follow-up treatment, and the effects of Restylane can last up to eight months with a follow-up treatment.
